Blastocyst Transfer

In the journey of IVF, a blastocyst is a day 5 or day 6 embryo formed after fertilization. It is the final stage of embryo development in the lab; beyond this we cannot culture in the lab. Unlike earlier stage embryos (Day 2 or Day 3), a blastocyst has more cells and a fluid filled cavity, making it more likely to implant successfully in the uterus.

STEP BY STEP : THE BLASTOCYST TRANSFER PROCESS :

  1. Ovarian Stimulation : Hormonal injections to stimulate the ovaries to produce eggs.
  2. Egg Retrieval : Short day care procedure carried out under anaesthesia transvaginally.
  • Fertilization : Eggs and sperms are combined in the lab either through the process of IVF or ICSI.
  1. Embryo Culture : Embryos are cultured till day 5 or day 6.
  2. Embryo Transfer : It can be fresh or frozen embryo transfer; and a good quality blastocyst is gently placed into the uterus using a thin catheter.
